I was quoted in a July 2 Bloomberg News article by Tara Patel on the riots in France, in which I sought to explain the deep roots of the problem in terms of France’s approach to questions of poverty and inequality. One of the main issues is that the country doesn’t gather statistics on race, ethnicity, and religion according to the principles of equality before the law and to avoid discrimination. But it also means that it can’t directly address the problems of discrimination.
