Law & Disorder: Understanding the French Protests

On July 14, I gave an interview on the French riots with the World Affairs Council of New Hampshire. I talked about the historical issues in France with regard to the police and their policing methods, which tend to be very aggressive; the problems of the ‘banlieues’--suburbs which house minorities who are mainly migrants (and their children) from North Africa as well as to a lesser extent from Sub-Saharan Africa—and the sources of anger of the young people living there. I also spoke a bit about the implications of all of this for the European Union.
